Shopify tracking fix: when Shopify, Meta and Google Ads don't match
Shopify, Meta and Google Ads will never match order by order, because each one counts in its own way. A gap bigger than about 20%, though, usually means something is broken: purchases duplicated after an external payment step, a pixel that says connected but sends no Purchase, or two apps sending the same event. I find the cause and fix it for a fixed 79 USD.
One store and up to three platforms (Meta, GA4 and Google Ads). Paid app subscriptions, if any are needed, stay in your name.
Sound familiar?
- Meta shows more purchases than real orders, often after Shop Pay, PayPal or another payment redirect.
- The Facebook and Instagram app says connected, but Purchase does not show in Events Manager.
- GA4 is missing purchases, or fills with (not set) after a tracking change.
- Google Ads conversions are not recording, or record a different value than the order.
- Shopify, Meta and Google differ by more than 20% every week.
Why it happens
- Two apps sending the same purchase. The Facebook and Instagram app plus a custom pixel or a tracking app, or the Google and YouTube app plus Google Tag Manager.
- Old thank-you page scripts. Shopify has been retiring the old additional scripts on the order status page, so tracking that lived there can stop without any warning.
- The customer returns from the payment page. Some payment methods bring the customer back to the order status page, and a badly set pixel counts the purchase again.
- Consent settings. A cookie banner or privacy setting that blocks events for more visitors than it should.
How I fix it
Compare one week of real Shopify orders against Meta, GA4 and Google Ads, to see where the count breaks.
Review the installed apps and Settings > Customer events, and find every tool that sends conversions.
Leave one source per platform and remove the duplicates.
Turn on server-side sending where it is missing, through the native apps or a server container.
Verify with a test order end to end and check the numbers again after a week.
What is included
- Order comparison against each platform.
- Duplicates removed and one source per platform.
- Purchase with value, currency and order ID in Meta, GA4 and Google Ads.
- A test order verified end to end.
- A short report of what was wrong and what changed.
Financial company running lead ads: every day I check the leads Meta reports against the leads that really arrived, by form ID, so the client knows the real numbers and duplicated or missing leads are caught the same day. It is the same method I apply to a store: compare against the real orders first, then fix the exact point where the count breaks.
Frequently asked questions
Will the numbers ever match exactly?
No, and that is normal. Each platform has its own attribution window and its own way of counting. The goal is a small, stable gap that you understand, not a perfect match.
What access do you need?
A staff or collaborator account in Shopify with access to apps, customer events and orders, plus access to your Meta dataset and your Google accounts.
Does it work on any Shopify plan?
Yes. The setup changes a little between plans, but the fix applies to all of them.
Do I need a paid tracking app?
Not always. Many stores only need the native apps set up correctly. If your case needs a paid app or a server container, I tell you the monthly cost before doing it.
